Thomas Vermaelen Sign Arsenal

Arsene Wenger declare his decision to improve Arsenal’s suspect defence by making Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen his first signing of the summer. At £10 million, Vermaelen, 23, is one of the most expensive defenders Wenger has ever bought and, although he can also play at left-back, he has been largely earmarked to improve the options at centre-back. William Gallas, Kolo Toure, Johan Djourou and Mikael Silvestre largely shared that position last season, but Vermaelen, who was described by Wenger as a “great signing”, is expected to come straight into the team.
“Thomas is primarily a left-footed centre back, but he’s multi-functional and can also play at left back,” said Wenger. “He is strong technically with a positive winner’s attitude and I have no doubt his arrival will strengthen our team. Thomas Vermaelen will be a huge asset to Arsenal.”

Vermaelen, who was captain of Ajax, added: “Everything is set up for Arsenal to be very successful for years to come and I joined this club because I know Arsenal will be challenging for trophies.”

Contract talks also remain ongoing with Robin van Persie and it is understood that a new long-term deal is likely to be announced within the next week.
